Another long and sleepless night
when does the darkness end?
I need some sunshine in my life
but, sunshine took my friend.

The heavens didn't open
the rain did not pour down.
The day my friend died
The sun was shining brightly
And, they ruled it suicide!

Al was an avid fisherman.
He liked to fish a lot.
He once told me when he had a problem
he took it to his fishing spot.

I went with him to his fishing spot
I watched him bait his hook.
He casted out across the lake and,
said "now take a look".

I sat down beside him
on the sandy shore.
He said "soak up some sunshine, and
your problems will be no more".

"It works for me everytime" he said and,I thought I understood.
The peace, quiet, and serenity,
would work when nothing else would.

Al always promised sunshine. He said
"anyone can promise the moon".
Sunshine didn't help that day
My friend Al died too soon.

I still get mad. I sceam, and yell
most times when I'm enjoying the sun.
Whatever problem Al had that day
He felt could not be undone.

Time has gone by, and I realize
that sunshine's still my friend.
The sun and Al will guide me
until I reach my end.

Our friend Al
I think all of us know someone who died by their own hand and all the feelings that engenders. The frustration that we couldn't stop it, the sadness mixed with anger that brings it's own problems. Thanks for writing this, once I dried my eyes I felt a lot better. Remember, there will always be sunshine and when we see it, maybe we'll think of our own Al and smile at the gifts he gave us and think less about what he took away from us. Peace, tim
