This song was not written about anyone in particular I know, but afterwards, I think I may have subconsciously had a former friend in mind. There are certain kinds of people in this world that are given the short end of the stick, and rather than try to do what they can with that stick, they burn it in hopes of excluding themselves completely. I did have one such friend, one that never could really ignore the insults others heaped upon her. When she found that sticking up for herself backfired, she became content with shutting up.

In short, she figured that if she stayed away from social life and ignored all her accusers and opponents, the problems would just go away by themselves. She also claimed that what she was doing constituted a lack of concern about what others had to say about her (negative or positive). She became completely irreceptive to everybody and was thus completely distrustful. And she was wrong. By ignoring all her enemies, she added fuel to their fire, and all new insults and rumors were circulated. And besides, she was not indifferent to what others said. It only seemed that way on the exterior.

I guess the message here is, stand up for yourself no matter what. Just because you're wrong about something, that does not given anyone the right to assasinate your character and belittle you.

P.S. The text in parentheses below indicates parts of the song which would be done using layered vocals, backing vocals, or overdubs. The idea here is that the subject of the song has misconceptions and I am challenging them.

They want and try to break you down
Strip you of what you hold dear
They’ll try to make you feel
What it’s like to disappear

(And you think…)
If nobody can see you (just blind)
If nobody can hear you (just deaf)
If no one’s there (just alone)
It’s impossible to care (just confess)

(You’re wrong…)

When no one asks how
You feel when they prefer to laugh
Find yourself in darkness now
But life won’t leave if you hold fast

(And you think…)
If nobody can see you (just blind)
If nobody can hear you (just deaf)
If no one’s there (just alone)
It’s impossible to care (just confess)

(You’re wrong…)

Collapse and crumble if it’s all
All that you have strength to do
Living a life nightmares have consumed
If that’s all that’s left of you

"If the only tool you own is a hammer, every problem will eventually begin to resemble a nail."
