His hand hung in the air and he cocked his head. Fingers
wiggled to mimic the movements made by someone typing. He
laughed...or was it a giggle? No, it wasn't even that. It
was a half smile, one of genuine appreciation.

"...and all he asked me was 'lifer?'," my boyfriend said
and then dropped his hands to his side. Icy, blue-grey
eyes gave me the feeling he thought he had sufficiently
proved some point that was obvious to him and him alone. I
shook my head and then wrapped my arms tightly around his
strong body.

"I know sweetie," I said, "I'm glad you have him and I
think it's cool that he's like that." Then I looked
at his handsome, gentle face and kissed him.

In the years since, I've often felt jealously over the
way he smiled when he said that one simple phrase. I had
never seen his eyebrows arc in appreciation over me the
way they did for his friend that night. And I often
wondered in the back of my love-worn mind if he'd rather
be dating his freckled, suntanned best friend...

"God grant me distraction."
