Everyone’s heard about America’s ‘Heavy Metal’ magazine thanks to the two movies bearing its name and similar format in erotic, testosterone-charged short stories that abound with violence, sex and wild sci-fi settings.
For about the same length of time there’s also always been French ‘Metal Hurlant’, with the same concept but with a much higher creative ethic and superior storylines. I also think the art’s better.
Right now, in the current english-translated volume being marketed as an ‘adult comic title’ in the United States, there are eight issues, and the earlier ones are getting increasingly difficult to find. I bought #’s 6 and 8 in the comic shop downtown and found #’s 1, 3 and 7 on eBay. This book is a real gem, with everything you know about ‘Heavy Metal’ but much better. There is even some critical theory about comic books and their history: excellent articles and interviews.
Get on board with this book right now and ask for it at your local comic book shop, or check it out online:

The website’s amazing, too, and there is a feature allowing you to scan archived art and storyline synopses.
These folks are doing it right, and it has immediately become my favorite comic book. In fact it’s the only one I’m buying since I’ve dropped out of the Dark Horse/Star Wars scene.
I give it five stars out of five.
