Transcript of Garda radio communications made just before the discovery of the Burnt Soul’s identity, December 2005

‘OFFICER 1 (noise in the background indicates Officer is in a vehicle): Suspect is moving east on Fitzwilliam Street.

OFFICER 2 (noises indicate he is on foot): I don’t see him.

OFFICER 1: He’s just gone into a newsagents…um…the name is…uh…Freddy’s, yeah Freddy’s.

OFFICER 2: Hold on (pause). Yeah. I see it now. I’m going in.

OFFICER 1: Gotcha.

[pause in communications for a few moments]

OFFICER 2 (whispering): Ok. He’s buying a newspaper, picking up some groceries…

OFFICER 1: I don’t need a blow-by-blow account of what he’s doing Saunders.

OFFICER 2 (whispering): Sorry. Watching too many cop shows.

OFFICER 1: I’m in position outside the newsagents. Damn, this is bullshit, following a guard. I mean it could be me next week if McGrath keeps going…

OFFICER 2 (whispering): He’s leaving the store. You see him?

OFFICER 1: I see him. He’s heading into the park, near Gibson’s Pub. Can’t follow him there.

OFFICER 2: I know. I’m on him.

[pause in communications for a few moments]

OFFICER 2: You there Saunders? What’s going on?

[pause in communications for a few moments]

OFFICER 2: Saunders? [pause] Saunders?

[pause in communications for a few moments]

OFFICER 2: Shit! Shit!

OFFICER 1 (whispering): You better wash out that potty mouth Farrell.

OFFICER 2: You dick! Jeez…I thought for a second there…

OFFICER 1 (whispering): Didn’t know you cared buddy. Anyway, our guy just stopped for a moment. Couldn’t see what he was doing so I got closer to have a look. He was just rolling a joint.

OFFICER 2: Where is he now?

OFFICER 1 (whispering): He’s leaving the park. You can pick him up in Merrion Place.

OFFICER 2: Right. I’m on it.

[pause in communications for a few moments]

OFFICER 1: He just entered his apartment block. Pick me up there and we can keep an eye on him outside.

OFFICER 2: Will do.

[longer pause in communications]

OFFICER 1 (urgently): Saunders to control. You read me?

CONTROL: What’s the..?

OFFICER 1 (panting, indicating he is running): We need backup at Merrion Place. Shots have been fired. I repeat. Shots have been fired.

CONTROL: Units on their way. Advise you stay outside until they arrive.

OFFICER 1: No time…Burnt Soul suspect inside…we’re already in the building.

CONTROL: Have you been hit? Do you need an ambulance?

OFFICER 1: Negative. Officer Farrell and myself were outside staking out the suspects apartment when we heard the shots. We’re investigating it now.

CONTROL: Do not enter Saunders. That’s an order.

OFFICER 1: Sorry Control. (whispering) He was firing at something…approaching apartment floor now…we’ll let you know how it goes.

CONTROL: Saunders, you are violating a direct order. Do not…[pause]…Saunders?

[longer pause in communications]

OFFICER 2: It’s all over Control. We were beaten to it.

CONTROL: What happened?
MCGRATH: Cancel the ambulance Control. Burnt Soul’s going nowhere.

CONTROL: Sergeant McGrath? Is that you?

MCGRATH: Yeah. I was watching the suspect too, just in case. He was sneaking out the fire exit of the apartment block where I was stationed. I spotted him and made to apprehend him, but he saw me and ran for it. I gave chase, pursuing the suspect back to his apartment where shots were exchanged…

OFFICER 1: Which is what we heard.

MCGRATH: Indeed. The suspect was killed.

CONTROL: Are you ok?

MCGRATH: Bit shook up, but yeah, I’m ok.

CONTROL: You should’ve called for backup. Saunders and Farrell could’ve helped you.

MCGRATH: No time.

OFFICER 1 (Cheerfully): You should see the stuff that’s here though. The cloak he was using, the gun, a knife, baseball bat. He even had a few newspaper clippings of the fire and Sarah McBride.

OFFICER 2: The Sarge really got him. He really got the Burnt Soul.

CONTROL: Well don’t keep me guessing. Who was it? Who’s been doing all these murders?

MCGRATH: It was Sweeney. I’d never have believed it but it was Paul Sweeney all along.’

Ah!
This isn't the end, is it? This installment was good and tense. Still loving it.

One sentence though left me confused: "OFFICER 1: He just entered his apartment block. Pick me up there and we can keep an eye on him outside." If Officer 1 was in the car, why would he need Officer 2 to pick him up? Or is that another way to say "Meet me there"?

Sorry
I forgot which Officer was in the car. Officer 2 was supposed to say the pick me up line. As for this being the end of the story, all I will say is: watch this space.
Thank you for your continued support too.
