There I was slumbering in the dark lonely night
Never had I known the sweetness of light
Dreams or nightmares touched not my mind
In ignorance I slept, life was so kind

Then there was you, then there was light
The love from your eyes drove away the night
It left me in its glare, naked and forlorn
And then your eyes, so deep and so brown
Rise and shine they called, sing along and dance
But I was too weak, so lonely, and so old
I closed my eyes to shut out your love
But my heart, so vile, so greedy
It broke down its cage in rapturous joy
And flew up to you, to dance at your feet.

In an instant you were gone, with all that you gave
The dark night was back, in contemptuous scorn
It calls me to sleep, in the cold of its womb
But I cannot go, for I cannot forget
I see your light in faces I canít reach
I live in this twilight, not alive, not dead.
