America on Force-Feed: Pop Princesses, Boy Bands and the Teenage Brain Drain

Johnny and Jane are stupid.

Worse than that, they’re terrible dumb-asses who not only have an increasingly deficient reading level (currently fifth grade, if they’re lucky, and declining, even in suburban schools according to recent studies)… They’re socially stupid and incapable of forming a sensible world-view.

Everyone knows about the first few items. Why specifically do I make the last statement? Because any citizen in a ‘free’ and ‘democratic’ society (which the United States is NOT in truth) should and must be able to comprehend world events, history and foreign cultures well enough to form an intelligent opinion of what they see and hear in the media and from the government. They should and must be motivated enough to seek out this information without prompting, and to find at least several sides of every story, foreign and domestic. This is the sort of intellectual lifestyle the American People, and nations like them, need to lead if things are to get better, let alone if we’re to be able to make the government stop leading us into catastrophe after catastrophe.

While riding with my girlfriend in Ocean City, New Jersey, I heard a local rock radio station play several soundbytes of teenagers stating opinions on the war in Iraq. (This is during the Occupation phase, still ongoing at this writing, after Dubya declared ‘major combat to be over’.) Between bouts of ‘ummmm’ and ‘uhhhhh’, the fifteen- and sixteen-year-olds I heard generally restated the Bush line: “Um, uh, I think we should conquer Iraq, overrun their country, and take over the oil so that the gas prices will come down.”

Well, if the average American citizen is going to be that simple and Machiavellian about gas prices, forget about ever ending the power of the oil corporations that bought up the patents on electric cars. Forget about ending America’s unending political malaise in the Middle East, forget about solving ANY problems, ever. The US Government, the most short-sighted, Machiavellian and brutal organization in the world ever to serve the rich, will in another couple of generations have the docile, mindless and obedient population it desires and deserves.

Thanks to the astonishingly profit-driven capitalist media in the USA, coupled with a media-generated youth culture that has qualitatively fallen through the floor of the subcellar, there will be vastly fewer sociopolitically conscious and knowledgeable citizens in America capable of questioning and challenging the US Government in any arena.

Now, granted, the radio station on which I heard all of this was a … well, what today passes for a ‘hard rock’ station, and doesn’t play the likes of Britney Whore and Justin Gigolo et al, but I think we could only expect the target audience of such programming to be even less mentally competent. What can any young human mind be like after continuous pumping with insubstantial sugar-coated schlock whose lyrics speak of nothing but puppy love and sex, sex, sex? At least the nu-metallers are whining about a small variety of things…

Due to the ubiquitous, megasaturated youth-oriented marketing we see everywhere, even adults cannot get away from it: Britney Whore is on the Pepsi cups at 7-11 (leading me to boycott Pepsi until that ad campaign was over), she’s on the glasses and kid’s meals with N’Suck at Burger King or McDonald’s (and Backdoor Boys are on the glasses and kid’s meals at the competitor’s restaraunts), they’re on television, they’re in the kid’s magazines, they’re on the bubblegum packaging, they’re everywhere I’ve seen except the cereal boxes… no, they’ve been there too.

This is insane.

The little ones, younger than the teenagers, are all caught up in it too, and it is becoming commonplace for eleven year olds to be caught up in the ‘love and romance’ pro-sex mentality of today’s pop music and get pregnant, often by much, much older men. Does America really want this?

Does America’s adults and parents (the latter of which are increasingly not adults!) believe that America can even sustain the veneer of ‘democracy’ and ‘freedom’ that passes now if this goes unchecked?

It’s time to take true control of the youth culture and start seriously redirecting kids to things that matter, and start filling their minds with real futures, with things that will make them real people, and not simply horny consumers spending their dollars, time and minds on things that can only make them sick.

Rock n Snarl
This is well put together commentary. Oh, and before anyone says it's biased against capitalism and commercial enterprise, try Bill Gates' remarks about another company's computer operating system that DARED to challenge his monopoly. I think companies that target youngsters in their advertising campaigns should be accused of psychological child abuse. Good job of work.

Too much makeup
You're definatey right on my friend. I particularly agree with your statements about young girls getting caught up in all of the crap. It's sad to me to see a 10 year old dressing like Brittany. Where has all the innocence gone?
