Why in the world would anyone choose
to live beside a river called ‘ooze’?
It’s very name suggests mud and slime,
And not at all like anything I’m
accustomed to!

I like my rivers clear and swift
with waterfowl that dip and drift;
bounded by meadows, marked walkways seen
following paths through the pastures green
of varied hue.

There are those towns in Cambridgeshire
that flank just such a river: here!
Where people dwell, live out their lives
beside a river, within St Ives!
The same! it’s true!

This waterway where people choose
to live, is not some middling flow
of marsh or creek, I’ll have you know.
This artery’s a watercourse,
a vital thread, from sea to source.
One point to note; and on this muse:
it’s full name is: River Great Ouse.
