I recently finished reading the extraordinarily interesting new biography of Tennessee Williams by John Lahr, “Mad Pilgrimage of the Heart.” I knew very little about Tennessee Williams before reading the book except that he was an acquaintance of Andy Warhol and the author of some really great plays including “The Glass Menagerie,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” and “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” Mr. Lahr vividly recounts William’s life on Broadway, from his rise to a celebrated Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, to his fall as a pathetic drug addicted alcoholic. The book is 765 pages and occasionally gets bogged down by minutia, but Mr. Lahr’s writing is exquisite and I found the book well worth its hefty $39.95 price tag.
