I’d like to write a piece of verse
to lift the attention
off the words on the page
to give imagination a great gift
and make the intellect a bit more sage.

I want it to be worth being enshrined --
without question,
regarded as fine art --
a lyric that long lingers in the mind
with images that lodge within the heart.

I want it to be hard to read aloud --
So heavy with emotion
the voice cracks --
And, when it is performed before a crowd,
Applause would seem to be anticlimax.

But mostly,
I‘m content when I can pen
a poem people want to read again.
