one hundred millenniums removed
from fertile crescent slopes
survivor of Batu-Khan-hordes
and Ivan the Terrible
Zara is most Caucasian among us

her emerald eyes
hold the difference
between being slapped
with truth
and kissed
by lies

she knows when it is rain
falling upon her back
and when it is piss

here six months
she learns
"blue sky"
"train whistle"
..and "love"
from me

daydreams take her
to Lake Kezanoi
a favorite shop in Grozny
and the pony she rode
as a young girl

armor and daggers clang
through nightmares
where copper
and gold
always remain
just out of reach

in the bitter cold
without animal skins
for warmth

she awakes near the St. Johns
where we first met
far from the land of minerals

we listen to the whistle
of the approaching train
