i lack the presence
devoid of voice

i feel the absence
of poise, of choice
where is the motion
where are my feet?
the soles, the toes
that once were fleet

and touch the sand
i try to stand
but the ocean is too close
and now it laps
i cannot rise
between my thighs
nothing's alive
i've grown averse
in these few seconds
to life and yet it beckons

i must get help
and here's the doctor
he gives me aspirin
tells me to chew it
and there's the flap
of the helicopter
i feel a spasm
but i'll get through it

what i should
and what i ougtha
where i went
did what they could
to my aorta
they placed a stent

so now i'm back
alas, alack
a living man
a subdued sole
the carotid dole
and i suppose
that's how it goes
toes twinkling in the sand
