Before the tears,
when helium balloons floated
above red jelly,
and iced cakes
sat pink and in love
with paper plates, they

laughed and giggled
in some high pitched,
foreign language,
a language
all their very own.

Then, when the table
sat bare and unwanted,
they,
passed parcels,
ran
in frilly frocks and jeans,
dashed in circles
around frightened chairs.

I saw the secret digs,
snarls of jealousy,
the pulled plaits,
such hatred in small faces….

and maybe, just maybe,
I came nearer
to understanding,
what war is all about.
