Blackbird working in a field of cornrows
alongside splayed  hands of pallid scarecrows.
Blackbird you sing from morning till night
for spirituals make your aches take flight.
Swing low sweet chariot today
and take my old bones way far away.

Blackbird these crops you’re not fit to eat.
They're grown for folks you'll never meet.
Blackbird your chicks better grow strong
or else they'll be sold for a pitiful song.
Swing low sweet chariot today
and take my old bones way far away.

Blackbird your eyes are a little too wise.
You should recall how slowly time flies.
Blackbird I heard tell of the freedom road
It’s the latest news or so I was told.
Swing low sweet chariot today
and take my old bones way far away.

Blackbird wait until darkness falls
I’ll be here until the meadowlark calls.
Blackbird believe I won’t betray you
together tonight is how we’ll get through.
Swing low sweet chariot today
and take my old bones way far away.
