England my England

England my England sets standards anew
Coveted ideals drooled over by hordes
an empire elated shall forever be true

Perched on red charabanc tourism grew
Drinking fine history of ladies and lords
England my England sets standards anew

Gilded by conquest stronger men knew
The Romans Saxons Vikings and Nords
an empire elated shall forever be true

England is England where all blood is blue
Timeless memory through poetic chords
England my England sets standards anew

Traditions so loyal old mingle with new
Pirated treasures kept still in their hoards
an empire elated shall forever be true

England my English country right through
of contrasting pageantry given by wards
England my England sets standards anew
an empire elated shall forever be true

villanelle
Proud to be hosting Olympics, eh?

That said, a traditional poetic form like this begs punctuation. But then, better no punctuation than wrong punctuation.

I'd move lines 7 and 8 into the space of lines 4 and 5, and vice versa. Why? Because
"Gilded by conquest stronger men knew
The Romans Saxons Vikings and Nords -
England my England sets standards anew"
just seems to go better together than the other way.

You pick up again with "all blood is blue" and that stanza ends with the line one repetition. Thematic, like.

I like it: it's far more spectacular than your usual.

Thank you for posting this.

Olympics

Yes I just hope the Olympics are a success and peaceful.

One of Ivor's sons has gone down to London to help out with them.

I hadn't got a clue what a villanelle was...thought it was an Ice cream.... Then Pen put me right and corrected all the blatant mistakes on my first attempts on her own thread...this wouldn't be here now if it wasn't for Pens help..

I hadn't got a clue what villanelle was. Pen hadn't got a clue what a charabanc was so I sort of returned the favour...a bit

I think you are right Lucie.....about swapping the lines.... so it's

England my England sets standards anew
Coveted ideals drooled over by hordes
an empire elated shall forever be true

Gilded by conquest stronger men knew
The Romans Saxons Vikings and Nords
England my England sets standards anew

Perched on red charabanc tourism grew

an empire elated shall forever be true

England is England where all blood is blue

England my English country right through
of contrasting pageantry given by wards
England my England sets standards anew
an empire elated shall forever be true

The change is it that stronger men knew standards got better the more England got conquered haha wish someone would Conker Cameron....

I was also thinking of changing

Drinking fine history of ladies and lords

To: Drinking fine Whiskey with Ladies and Lords
the Jocks in frocks connection....I desisted

Grammar punctuation...... the Olympics would be over by the time etc

I dare not get too much into complicated stuff so I chose a simple subject for my next "Off the Cuff" piece

Pigs Frogs and Jews with a synagogue thrown in for good measure......

Oh England.
Punctuation aside, I think this s pretty cool. Why not have a literate, intense, patriotic feeling for the country of your birth. 'Tis a country with a long history of dramatic events with all those Kings and Queens,Lords and Ladies, Knights and blaggards roaming the country side upsetting the peasants and making a muck of everything. (I think that may be a Monty Python paraphrase.) Good on you all for having the Olympics - I pray it gives a boost up.

favorble
I watched our news last night and it was all about how many poeple are unhappy with the way the games are going. It raeally ticks me off the way the news can seem to only find the warts to report.

I also watch bbc news at times--they do the same thing. Of course, they only find the good in the games, but everything else is foul.

About the poem--very good work. There are a few spots that could be smoothed out by moving words and it would not hurt the meter. Other than that, very well done--shows the pride of country nicely.

Eric's villanelle
Yes, by all means, keep "drinking fine history", as it evokes the thirst of tourists for this finery and grandeur, and enriches the texture of not only the stanza, but the entire villanelle.

"drinking fine history"

I was impressed with the majority of the Olympic Games opening ceremony.

I think that people "not in the loop" might have had some difficulty understanding it.... it was a Tad..... self effacing..... so what !!!

Who the hell is Mister Bean (Rowan Atkinson) for example..... If you haven't seen his TV Series including Black Adder.

And who is the old Geezer that cant sing anymore that wound it all up.... Took it from High to Low

It was a brief selective historical review colorful and entertaining..... cost a few bob.

Now for the medals.........

fine history
Opening ceremony's finest was the lighting of the flame: amazing.
Opening ceremony's worst was the Queen's boredom.
I've lined up an opening ceremony villanelle.

As for the old geezer who can't sing anymore, half his band is long dead and we can't hear them at all, so. Take what you can get.

I was entertained. Can't ask for more.
