I woke up this morning
And I felt so blue
I closed my eyes, bowed my head
And said a prayer for you

Dear God, keep him safe
And bring him home to me
So that we may reunite
And start a family

Every day is so hard
So many miles that we're apart
Every night that I pray
I pray for you

Since the first night that you went away
It seems my world has gone astray
And slowly I'm becoming unglued

As I close my eyes and wish tonight
You were holding on to me so tight
I dream a dream so sweet I can't stop loving you

You're so far but so near
That I can hardly fall asleep
All I want to do
Is lay next to you
And hold you through the night
For when the morning comes I know that you'll be gone
And I'll have to carry on

So let my mind be strong
And my heart be true
Know that I'm in love with you

As you kiss my lips
I begin to cry
It's so hard to say goodbye

You're so far but so near
That I can hardly fall asleep
All I want to do
Is lay next to you
And hold you through the night
For when the morning comes I know
Yes when the morning comes I know
When the morning comes I know that you'll be gone

So far
I have no real criticism - a songwriter writes the way they write - I like the AAB structure and would have liked to see that carried out throughout the piece. The different verse structures was a little offsetting for me - although each written verse stands fine on it own. It seems that what you intended - I would like the piece more if there was a repeated refrain - to bring the listener back to the point. I have written pieces that have 3 4 and 5 line verse structures in the same song (My Publisher needed to call them Verse 1 1a and bridge 1 and 1a) and a consistent chorus and they worked well.
This seems a catchy rememberable chorus:
'As I close my eyes and wish tonight
You were holding on to me so tight
I dream a dream so sweet I can't stop loving you'
Just my thoughts - nice work.
