Hello all! Sorry for slacking on the updates. I just didn't want to update without being closer to launching, and we are now so close! Here's the quick version.
The new version of the site is almost done. It'll basically be the same site, just powered by different software with some cosmetic changes. Most of the changes for writers will be at the manage your writings area. You'll have more options and control, and things will be much neater/cleaner and easier to use. Here's the timeline:
- Early July: Private Beta (Invite only - more on this below)
- Late July/Early Augest: Public Beta - The site will basically be done at this point so we'll open it up to public for testing. During this beta is when we'll switch the new site to replace the current one and archive it.
- Sept 1 - New site Offically relaunches
More details:
The private beta will be open to all existing members of Lit.Org and a few friends of the site who have volunteered. Our friends over at WritingForums.com may also come lend a hand to help test the new site and promote the relaunch as well. The purpose of the private beta is to give everyone a chance to sign up before we open it up to the public and to test everything out ot make sure there are no bugs (there will be).
The public beta is to make sure everything holds up under real world conditions and iron out any remaining bugs.
The transion will from the current site to the new one will be pretty straight forward. No data should be lost, except possibly for votes. The main question I've received about the change is how are we going to get all the old published works over to the new system. While it won't be ready on day one of the private beta, sometime during July I'll release the importer and you'll be able to start importing your works from the old system to the new one. I would love to have imported them all for you but this is a pretty major system change and this will make sure all the data comes over as accuratly as possible. Besides, we don't really need to import all the works of members who no longer visit or use the site. Which leads me to:
What happens to all the old stuff? Don't worry, the old content from the site will remain in the old system. It'll be referenced as an archive and will be read only. When you register for the new site and import your works, they'll be MOVED from the archive to the current site. That way the archive will only contain items from members who are no longer active on the site.
How to get ready for the new version:
The main thing is, make sure you know your username, email and login for the current site. You'll need ALL 3 of these pieces of information to import your work into the new system.
If you have any questions, shoot them to me via email (chris@lit.org). Make sure you follow the updates here, on Facebook and check your emails for future updates.
