I knew not then;
Id know you now.
The tick tocks
Of your trepidatious heart;
The abyssal yearnings.
Unstaunched wounds
Id nurse
with butterfly kisses.
If only you would let me.
Long ago,
when we were firm,
so young,
I floated on your glacial sea.
Your tempests shook me not
From my icy preserver.
Those gales were for me,
Your ravenous undercurrent
My North Star.
And now, it comes to this.
Bereft of artifice,
I stand once again
At the shore
Of our unknowable knowing.
What I thought then,
Id not think now.
In the distance
The ice sheets have retreated;
Returning to their source.
The sea of our undoing.
Float now, no,
I would swim,
In the arctic of your longing.
I would alight,
And you would see,
You would know.
What we were then,
We are not now.
The gales may come
And force me to warmer climes
But my eyes,
Dark and full of longing
Would search the floes.
Wistful hunters
For elusive prey.
You must know.
What you were then,
Who you are now,
Id see.
Id know.
