A/N: This one came out differently than my normal style. I wrote it as I was playing the game. (Maybe if I’d paid attention I wouldn’t have lost) I’m work-shopping this one so critque’s are expected and most welcome.

I’m sitting in a coffee shop
Across from an old man
The battlefield is set
And a café mocha for courage

Wild and erratic my offense
“Are you sure about that one?”
He asks as I send my queen
To her demise

An indulgent smile
He lets me pull back
Then takes my rook pawn
“Check!” he declares

Slashing and stabbing
My attack begins anew
With no wasted motion
He picks me apart

He knew I was going to lose
Six moves into the game
I was overmatched
But soldiered on

Ducking and dodging
Did not stay his hand
Bobbing and weaving
Just made it come faster

Slow and steady
Usually wins
This hare had met
His turtle

“Checkmate!”

There is a lesson here
I just can’t quite
Put my finger on it…

Great storytelling here - intellect against emotion and fury. Oh well - we bring out the arsenal we have and the rest is up to providence.

Chess is actually a very simple game, a lot like dancing, you know within 3 or 4 moves if your partner can dance or not.

Most seasoned chess players usually let the game go beyond th basic to save face of their opponent.

It is not hard to figure out why girls cannot play chess very well, but I will let everyone figure it out for themselves. LOL

Good writing here.

Dave,
Lucie pointed out issues with the first stanza. Your progression through the game made me smile.
Keep slingin'

Lucie,
The rules of chess are simple. The "game" is anything but. In college, I played against some highly proficient female opponents. You can also find some great female chess players in Irish Pubs..

Ron,
Rachel Crotto, Irina Levitina, Elena Donaldson, Anna Akhsharumova, Angelina Belakovskaia, Elina Groberman, Anna Zatonskih, Rusa Goltiana, Jennifer Shahade, Anna Hahn, Camilla Baginskaite..I'll let you figure out what they excel at.
