Rose petals once crimson
Watered by salty tears
Fall from fragrant zones
Above the marble mantle.

A drafty window whisks them
Toward the hungry blaze
Where snapping logs create
A sizzling crematorium.

Their youthful splendor's
Forgotten,
Insulted by wispy cobwebs
As their feet decompose.

Their once-sweet message is sullied,
By the uncertainty of love
As petals fall and meet the flames
Making bitter incense of what was.
