You filter fortune, footnote all your hopes
You qualify those visions born to sing
With antidotes to brews all heaven-sent
You dilute rapture, summarise your pain
All tears of joy you collect in a jar
All possibility reduced to Real
You turn your deepest hopes to acronyms
You live “however”, “but” and “wait and see”
Thriving on the wish to thrive on nought
You scatter all your danger on the wind
When fire flares, a bucket lies to hand
When passion roars, you lock the double door
Yet when the moment takes you unawares
You turn to raucous nova all your cares
