Freedom Eroding In America

author: David R. Kimball

The erosion of American freedoms did not end with the Bush administration. The slow descent into fascism that Naomi Wolf warned about in 2007* continues under Obama as well. This article lists some of the more recent ominous indications, and provides informative links. *
On July 12th, it was reported in the mainstream media that U.S. Marines are working directly with the Los Angeles Police Department on the streets of South Central L.A. We're told that the L.A.P.D. is tasked with teaching the Marines how to win over the "hearts and minds" of Afghanis by means of "exercises" on the streets of the "homeland." [1] The mainstream media, however, did not seem to find it at all troubling that the military was "embedding" with police in a major U.S. city, with U.S. citizens in the "exercise" as the "enemy."

"Justified" by the April 20th Gulf Oil Disaster, which has spewed about 2 million gallons of toxic "crude" into the Gulf every day for almost three months, on Independence Day, July 4, 2010, the public sandy beach in Panama City, Florida was patrolled by military jeeps.[2]

It seems that Americans are becoming more and more accustomed - and conditioned - to seeing military troops deployed in public areas, like streets and beaches.

Sacramento, California currently seeks what the city government calls "water conservation ambassadors" in Sacramento neighborhoods. " officials want residents to do more than just pick up the phone and report water wasters..." the July 10, 2010 article in the Bee reads.[3] This idea seems benign at first glance; the city is merely seeking to recruit "volunteers" to "educate and survey" their neighbors about their water use, and then return the "survey" to the city. But the very concept - of any government seeking to enlist residents to watch and question their neighbors about what they are doing and then report back to the government about it - should be repugnant to anyone valuing liberty.[4]

In Arizona, recently passed legislation makes "failure to carry proof of citizenship a crime." "With this law, a person who is a legal citizen of the United States (even born here) could be walking on foot... stopped by the police, asked for documentation of their citizenship, and then detained. [if they fail to produce it]."[5] Well-paid talk-show propagandists assure their listeners that Arizona SB1070 merely targets "illegal immigrants", while in reality this unconstitutional legislation places in jeopardy the rights and freedoms of all of us. Arizona SB1070 empowers Arizona police to disregard the "probable cause" safeguard as specified in the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution. SB1070 assumes possible guilt because of appearance alone, and forces people to "prove their innocence" or else be charged with a crime. Thus, SB1070 is not an "immigration law" as it has been deceptively described, but is a direct attack on the presumption of innocence[6] upon which our entire legal system is based, an upon which much of our freedom depends. It is "the foot in the door" for forcing all of us to have to "show our papers" on demand by authorities. We are not presumed guilty until proven innocent in America!

Many states now have similar bills awaiting passage in order to force their populations to "show their papers" on demand, as Arizona is currently doing. In spite of incessant media propaganda in favor of this totalitarian legislation, many Americans are aware and are standing up for the Constitution and against racial profiling. There are other ways to solve border and citizenship issues which are in accordance WITH the Constitution. There is national resistance against this law and others like it. Google "Boycott Arizona."

On April 7, 2010, Glenn Greenwald reported in an article entitled "Confirmed: Obama Authorizes Assassination of U.S. Citizen" that "the Obama White House has now expressly authorized the CIA to kill [American citizen Anwar] al-Alwaki no matter where he is found, no matter his distance from a battlefield." As Greenwald states: "...this American citizen will now be murdered by the CIA because Barack Obama has ordered that it be done. What kind of person could possibly justify this or think that this is a legitimate government power?"[7]

In a March 19, 2010 article, Liliana Segura reported that "On March 4, 2010, Senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman introduced a bill called the 'Enemy Belligerent Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010' that, if passed, would set this country on a course to become a military dictatorship."[8] This bill - S.3081 - authorizes the government to detain any persons defined as "unprivileged enemy belligerents" indefinitely, "without criminal charges and without trial."[9] McCain and Lieberman both took an Oath to "support and defend the Constitution" when they became senators; their introducing of the totalitarian bill S.3081 clearly violates that Oath.[10] Why is this not reported, and why does their continued suitability to hold public office go unquestioned?

Freedom of movement is gradually being more curtailed. There are currently over 80,000 names on the Terrorist Security Administration's "No-Fly List" and about ten names are added every day. [11] In 2004, U.S. Senator Edward M. "Ted" Kennedy's name appeared on the government's "No-Fly List'" and he was not allowed to board his flight until cleared by a "supervisor."[12] On June 30, 2010, the American Civil Liberties Union "sued the U.S. government, alleging that it had violated the constitutional rights of ten U.S. citizens or legal residents by placing them on the "No-Fly"... list..."[13] The price of a U.S. passport increased by 47% on July 13, 2010.[14] There is an "800 Mile Wall" currently under construction between the U.S. and Mexico, which severely restricts the freedom of movement of wildlife and humans alike.[15] The G20 Summit met in Toronto, Canada, on June 24-26. On June 23, 2010, law-abiding CODEPINK activist Medea Benjamin was detained for over 48 hours and then denied entry into Canada.[16] On June 24, 2010, peaceful American activists Luke Rudkowski, Matt Lebacek and Kelley McCarthy were held for five hours before being denied entry into Canada.[17]

US Constitution
Very interessting writing. I am often in awe of our US Constitution, and have ofter wondered, if the term "all men are created equal..." also includes women and colored people, the does "all men..." include people not born here, dies it say anywhere that what it means is "that all people..." and not "all people born or naturalzed in the USA?"

I did not attend high school's last (Senior) year, and so I missed the class on US Constitution, required to grad fronm High School and civics, all the required classes that only teach the U.S. way of life and what is expected of us as citizins. Kids, stay in HIGH SCHOOL this stuff is absolutely essential.

I have been reading and hearing all sorts of gloom and doom sccenarios since I was a kid. Well, I hope some of the readers can see what I see, this is still THE USA, it is not about to fail, we have the best (but not perfect) government and way of life on the planet, and the USA I grew up in is still alive and well, and not about to be overturned, fail, or otherwise become a thing of the past.

We are the survivers, and the USA is still the place everyone wonts to be.

we the sheeple
Tyranny, the subject you are approaching, is one of those subtle little things that must ever be watched for and guarded against. It seems to come down to a question of whether individuals can govern themselves, or whether they actually need to have their thoughts, words and actions governed by others who "know what's best." Sadly, we already have our opinions and attitudes molded by media propaganda. Our population is so compliant and complacent already, that we don't even mind or notice that we have a little bit of tyranny in our lives. That little bit is the foot in the door, and a little bit can go a long way. In my humble opinion, we have not been vigilant enough collectively to chase this wolf from the door.

I applaud your effort to get the word out. It's nice to see someone writing a documented piece. If you want to be heard by a tiny fraction of the sheeple, perhaps you can submit to the Progressive Populist, a publication that still assumes people can read and think for themselves.

God Bless the USA
I suppose anyone who believes what they see on the Telly needs all of the help they need in thinking, whether it be for themselves or out protesting on the streets. The media, all of them and NO exceptions, are out for one thing and only one thing, ratings. Without ratings, there is no money for them.

Anyone who thinks all congressmen and all senators are evil, vile, self-centered money grabbing morons have rocks in their heads. Most of them are good, even great Americans who really believe in and support our Constitution.

I still insist, I still know, that the American Dream is alive and well and not about to end or fade away anytime soon. Our immigration problems are in reality lawyer/attorny problems by lawyers who want every immegrant to fork over their 10-25 thousand dollars to their greedy hands just to be "legalized." That is the problem, and the only problem with it. We could solve the rest of it.

But make no mistake, Americans, we the people, know what is going on and vote accordingly with not a lot of concern for GOP, Democrat, Socialist, or So called Tea Parties, we vote our souls, we vote our collective wisdom.

We view all, yes, all political ads and back stabbing on TV as humor for a while, then just use the Remote when we can't take it any longer. We are aware of the average intelligence of politicians at every level.
We see the humor of any male or female congressman over 220 pounds telling us they are going to help our country and our childred shed weight, and that the best thing MacDonalds can do for the USA is to shut down every MacDonalds restaurant in San Francisco permanently.

We are the American Dream, and we are alive and well and shall be for many moons to come.

What is being free?
Maybe John McCain's campaign advisor Phil Gramm was right when he called us, a nation of whiners.

Maybe we are the Great American Cry Babies!
