I have seen the news
Have heard the lies
I have seen the pictures
Of terror eyes

Yesterday’s blood
Not even dry
I cannot forget
Your terror eyes

The brazen abuse
The snickering vice
With smirk and smug
Their terror eyes

Will we learn or forget
About what passed our eyes?
Is the truth witnessed
By just the skies?

The taste is bitter
And so the cries
One must tell their story
Of terror eyes

terror eyes
sometimes the gift of sight is not a gift at all...

I've lived long enough to see the mental callousness we as a culture have developed. I was sickened by the film footage of the assassination of a president now days that footage is shown to school children and we are assailed with horrible images everyday of our lives. Slaughter and mayhem has become our entertainment and we condemn the Romans for their bloody Colosseum Circuses. How are we different - because we say, "Oh that is not real?" What will we become when such horror no longer moves us? Is what happened on 9/11 just a movie memory to us now? What now goes into our eyes is diminishing our souls!

Thank you Cmsmuse and Jonpenny.
Thank you for your comment Cmsmuse! True, it is the horror we see when people inflict pain on each other that makes us old rather than young, a ceasing of innocence.
Thank you Jonpenny, I like your reflection on how
we seem to suffer from overload - excess of the horrors around us. What do we feel? Or are we slowly
descending to the "no longer feeling level" as you pointed out. I hope not. perhaps our writings may contribute to keep people interested and emotionally awake!
My original idea for this poem came from looking at photos of Abu Ghraib then extended somewhat to a larger idea of what
'terror eyes' really mean.
Thank you both!
