I will venture into the dark and drunken streets of the Silverlake district of L.A. tonight to see a rare live performance of Mirah at the Bootleg Theater. Iím taking my camera and my pencil and plan on producing both a video for YouTube and a review for this forum. I love my camera and my pencil because sometimes they are a great excuse to get out of my comfort zone and do something I might not normally do if I didnít happen to have a camera or a pencil in my hand.
I innocently stumbled upon the music of Mirah one dark December morning a little over four years ago. She lives in San Francisco or a small town in Washington. No one seems to know for sure. It doesnít really matter. In 2006 Mirah had just released a new album on K Records called ďjoyride: remixes.Ē My favorite song is ďLa Familia.Ē
Mirah has a brand new album now called ď(a)speraĒ Iím sorry to report itís been really hard to find a copy of it. I havenít heard a note of "(a)spera" yet. I read the new album is a departure for her, something different. Mirah works solo a lot; perhaps tonight will be with a band.
I hope this doesnít sound like a gross generalization, but Mirahís small and adoring worldwide audience is made up mostly of young women (she is openly gay), so Iím a little apprehensive that my presence there tonight will not go unnoticed. Iím willing to wager whatever you want to wager that thereís not going to be too many tall bi-speckled men with grey mustaches and an annoying touch of gout attending tonightís Mirah show.
Itís been raining.
I hope it doesnít rain tonight.
Someone stole my umbrella and used it in the commission of a crime. Police tell me I canít get it back until after the trial. They donít know when the trial will be. In the meantime, I just sleep a lot and woolgather and listen to the sound of the rain.
