Somewhere in the middle...

I ran down the hallway, the guards chasing after me. I turned the corner barely noticing the change in lighting. My pace slowed and I twisted around quickly. The guards had stopped at the edge of the wall and I could faintly see one of them talking to another guard somewhere else in this labyrinth. I started to run again, hoping this was my chance.

I heard a low humming ahead of me. As I got closer it grew louder. I placed my hand against the wall and felt it vibrating. My eyes searched the long, narrow hallway. I backed up slowly as the whole wall began to shake. The humming grew louder and the vibrations more violent.

I heard a shot fire and I threw my body to the ground. The concrete exploded around me. Pieces of the wall crashed down over my body. I sat up and backed away, grabbing onto the wall for support. Dust permeated throughout the hall. I covered my eyes and coughed as the smoke filled my lungs. As the dirt started to clear I could see a large creature coming through the break in the wall. I was too afraid to run. I had no where to go.

The dust encircled the beast. The only visible characteristic was a pale outline of the beast’s body. Each of its steps threw clouds of dust into the air. I sheltered my eyes with my hands, uncovering them too late.

The hulking mammoth moved swiftly towards me and before I could even move it leaped at me. Its feet slammed against my body and I fell backwards. I tried to move but its feet held me to the floor. I reached desperately for a weapon. My hands searched the ground until coming upon a broken piece of concrete. I brought it closer to me and heaved it at the brute. The rock shattered across the creature’s face and it fell against the wall. It screamed in pain as its hands covered the bloody cuts torn across its head.

I looked around for another weapon, perhaps something more durable. I don’t even remember feeling any pain at what happened next. My head turned to see a blur move towards me. Everything around me had lost description. My body rose into the air and flew against the adjacent wall. The wall broke under my force and I smashed through. I fell limply to the cold ground. I lay on top of the rubble unable to get up. Almost deafened with bloody ears, I heard the rock crunch under the heel of the beast as it approached my fallen body. It leaned down and I felt its claws cut my skin. My world turned to pain and darkness.

I woke up later, half buried in stone. The beast lay slain beside me. My whole body was in pain. I rose slowly, shards of rock pushing against my cuts. I attempted standing but was too weak. I fell back to the ground but felt someone catch me. I turned my head slowly. Every bone hurt and the blood trickling down my eyes blurred my vision. A half woman, half blur stood over me.

“Come on,” she said, “we’re leaving.”

She threw me over her shoulders and we were gone.
