why write it
who will read it
why bother
yourself silly
when you know
no one's there

cigarette ash
and coffee stains
have more to them
than these pages
black on white
so neatly piled
for recycling

the garbage guy
may read some
maybe he has use
for a laugh or sigh
over the waste
he's seen of life

he will go home
to sit and write
songs of lost love
from blue times
a laureate of scars
black on white
the dead time
of night his voice

we must give it up
these pity's sakes
it does no good
for that rare relief
we are granted
when we get words
to smile our smile

it's just a trick
a slight of mind
an eternity
in the making
for ashes and stains
for a heartbeat
no one hears
