I know I'm not to look at you and think -

Ethics insist on no less
I know that my wife sleeps beside me
I know that angels go sometimes unblessed

It wasn't your face that I took to -

It was seen and forgot in a flash
Your breasts, well, I just didn't notice
Not through choice but through mere happenstance

All other essentials slipped by me -

Truth is my mind's just not on that
And I'd have lost myself in dry Whitman
But for the bow on your shoe when you sat.

Like sarcasm masqueing as footwear -

I nodded with a patriot's smile
That alone would have made you a footnote
On a page in a dusty back file

I'll cop it and say I was taken

By your hand bespawled white, red and blue
Chill-Pollocked it barbed-fishhook took me
Like only the grotesque can do.
