i sat around fountains
flowing free as serenity
i fed my bottle to the stream
to set beside me

i took out a cigar
held it close to my nose
it reminded of paradise lost
the satan milton wrote of
after the fall
when all the angels lain
scattered and broken
in a lake of fire

it was with tears
in his eyes
those only angels cry
that satan called out
to the lesser gods
and held fast
what little spirit remained
picked them up the way fathers do
when children trip
hating the world
stomping concrete curbs
and weeping

i took out a pocket knife
and cut the two ends of my stogie
lit it with flame
and held the smoke

there i sat
around fountains
watching the water
questioning what it was
to be free
