With reference to your reflections above:

1. Yes. I could have used that alternative spelling- oi. Perhaps, should have.

2. & 3. Yes. The wheel is saying, "Ow, I am in pain, and seeing your pain at the noise and bother, so complete my lubrication, forthwith!"

4. It's been some years since I lived there, but in New Orleans, which has its own way of talking, I believe I would hear it as, "earl".
