poppy fields shimmer below us
figures in beatnik-like black
don't bother looking up
we continue trip
visitors on tour of duty
far from home and peace

as mountains near
it gets quiet
each of us going to places
where girls wear flowers in their hair
to times when music played and
we loved

showtime
we go in hot and hard

returning over full-flowered fields
a new replacement to our team asks
think we got him
from places and times elsewhere
there's no answer

Bobby's summer
In the summer of 1967, I was a geeky, nerdy 14 year old (my birthday is in Fall) whose passtime was making fun of the Latin scholar I was by tossing absolute ablatives at equally geeky and nerdy contemporaries...Sad...Also, that summer, I had my first summer job, earning 75 cents an hour in a clothing factory, making piecework tickets. And also, that summer, it was Expo 67 here in Montreal and on weekends, we missed the last subway home...and walked...endlessly...

Not everybody lived in California in 1967...

I was too young for social consciousness at 14. I wasn't the 14 year olds we have today...I figure among those who read 1967 as history...

All I can say about that year is that I knew, and listened to, the music. Oh, and my beige lipstick and my black mascara and my straight hair. And the original 007 movies...

Thanks for the memory...highway.

But...isn't 1967 closer to Hippie era than to Beatnik?

From Kansas to Kandahar
Nearly seven years and we still haven't dropped a house on the Wicked Witch of the Mideast.

Lucie-
Was also 14 that summer..the "Summer of Love"..Of course, this is 41 years and little awareness later..

The 'beatniks' were on Haight St., in the coffee houses. The 'hippies' were in the park.

Dylan, Jimi, Janus, Stones, Beatles, Doors, Dead, Airplane, Byrds, Hollies, Buffalo Springfield, Kinks, Who, Small Faces, Temps, Miracles, Marvin, Supremes, Miles, Fleetwood Mac, Traffic, Cream...

Ciao,
Bobby

CocoaHill-
"there's no answer"..

Our conflicts will not be resolved using same consciousness staring them.

Ha Noi ing history
Americans in foreign poppy fields seems to recur. Hmmm. Anyway, your theme holds true at 14,41, or thereafter.

Summer of 67
Hi

I was wishing for poppy fields, staring outside at sunshine from my Hospital bed at Cambridge Military Hospital in Aldershot where I spent May and June recuperating from a difference of opinion on the direction my motorcycle could take on a high speed corner.

Fortunately I was later sent home to Chester for six weeks holiday recuperation and rest…I still haven’t got a clue what they saw wrong with me (no broken bones) however I went back to the hospital for another week before returning to my Tech College. I came top in examinations that I had missed all the training for…. Mainly electrical stuff… must have been a bright Spark….

I was sorry I missed out on all the free love Hippy Stuff. At 17 years old in 67 I had been in the Army two Years and flower Power was a no no…. Dylan..You don’t believe in war but what’s that gun your toting was a joke…. There were loads of great groups about the boys were not as keen on the Beatles as the girls were ….

CH-
'Theme holding true' is disheartening part*..
This is about collective 'we', as well...

Fairplay-
The Band, Fairport Convention, Jeff Beck, Peter Green, Zombies, Beach Boys, Procal Harem (sp?)...list goes on and on..Yeah, I liked the Rolling Stones (Girls loved the Beatles- I liked John Lennon & George Harrison), Dylan, Jimi, Traffic, Cream, Doors...

*Our conflicts will not be resolved using same consciousness 'starting' them.

Thanks for input...
