Normally I just start with an idea and no gameplan so I'm trying a story in the mystery genre utilising Aristotles guidelines -
Working Title - Circle of Stone
Setting:- Modern day England. Stonehenge. Royal Observatory Greenich. London. Hyde Park.
Plot: A young Australian tourist Mathew Logan discovers a dead body at Stonehenge during
a late night prank gone wrong. After being detained by security and the arrival of police, Logan and an accomplice Ellyse are taken into custody.
On the drive back to the station, the police wagon is run off the road and the two are freed by Ellyse's cohorts - Damon, Eddy and Georgia. Mathew is torn between handing himself over to the police and going with the band. They give him no choice. Later Mathew overhears the four discussing whether to kill him or not and takes an opportunity to escape.
He finds himself in a foreign country without any friends or resources and only one contact. An online friend calling herself hiphophoney_69. He emails her and she agrees to meet. Mathew is dissapointed to find his friend is a limping sixty-nine year-old woman with a hip condition called Bea Andrews.
However Bea turns out to be a resourceful ally and she has a network of friends, the grey army (or circle of stone) who use a variety of old fashioned skills (homing pigeons, short-wave radio, ex-miltary and police contacts, word of mouth, discussion groups, manual skills, work for food and shelter etc) to help Mathew stay under the radar of the sophisticated modern day police network.
As Mathew and Bea try to investigate the murder at Stoenhenge, they are pursued by Ellyse and her gang who are members of an obscure group called " the Earth Omegas" who beleive humankind is a virus sent down to earth and that by destroying humankind entirely (including themselves) they will be saving the earth.
As Mathew and Bea start to unravel the events leading up to the death of the unknown man, they discover it is intricately linked to the mystical site. In order to understand what has occured and to clear himself Mathew may have to solve the age-old mystery of Stonehenge itself.
What Stonehenge truly is, or was, is the missing link in the line of logic of the killer or killers.
Reversals:
Initialy Mathew has no time for the elderly, (he is even caught writing on the stonehenge stones showing his lack of respect for the past) but as he discovers how resourceful and helpful they are he begins to see them in a new light.
Discoveries:
The big discovery comes when (so&so reaslises that he is in love with so&so) brought about
by the reversals.
Other discovery comes when they find out the truth about Stonehenge, solve the murder
and trap the real killer or killers.
Characters:
Mathew Logan - 23 yr old Australian economics student. Immature, ignorant and reckless. Athletic yet clumsy and awkward with manual labour. Smart but not street-smart. Good with kids and animals (being still a big kid himself).
Bea Andrews - 69 yr old English retired school science teacher. Resourceful, wise-cracking, optomistic and eccentric. Wears brightly coloured hats. Limps. Kind-hearted but sometimes short-tempered.
Veronica Andrews - 42 yr old daughter of Bea, possible love interest for ML. Librarian who is pragmatic and homely. Very calm figure. She is the rock around which the adventures revolve.
Ellyse Kreijick - 27 yr old Femme Fatale. Dutch backpacker. Curvy blondee. Pleasant oval face but a toughness as well. Impulsive, vivacious and manipulative. Definite love interest for ML.
Damon Wesley - 30 yr old English writer (or so he claims). Leader of a small section of the sect (a cell). Charming and well spoken. Tall good looking broody sort. Oozes charisma and sex appeal not to mention sect appeal.
Eddie Wesley - 28 yr old brother of Damon - unemployed glazier. Opposite of Damon. Either monosabyllic or quoting scripture. The brawn as well.
Georgia Oswell - 16 yr old girlfriend of Eddy. Paranoid. Erratic. Flirts with all the men. Hates Ellyse. Carries a flickknife which she loves to show off, as well as her tats.
Inspector Doherty - 57 yr old Scotland yard - detective inspector assigned to the Stonehenge murder. Thirty year veteran of the force. Thirteen as a detective.
Aleister Viney - 73 yr old retired ex SAS officer. Tough nut. Rides a Norton. Also races homing pigeons.
