Jennys finger tightened on the trigger as Paradox moved closer. Sharpe entered the church behind her and started to shout something but realised she wouldnt hear him. He ran over to her in time to push her gun hand into the air as she fired. Jenny turned furiously and Sharpe signed,
Jenny, look at what hes doing or rather not doing.
She scowled, turned to face Paradox again and shrugged,
So what?
Hes not trying to scare you. Sara stepped from behind Sharpe and Jenny signed,
Wow - now we got a party. Then, Shit youre right, the grey men are supposed to play on your phobias.
Paradox opened his mouth and croaked,
I mean you no harm. I am Paradox.
Jenny was reading his lips and signed,
No youre David Morris and youre supposed to be dead.
Paradox hesitated, then signed,
Im sorry but I have no memory of this Morris. But Im happy to accept your assertion that I am he. However Im aware of another entity, or more accurately entities. They call themselves cybermites and they seem to be constantly evolving.
Paradox explained that as the cybermites evolved, they had realised that the body they occupied was no longer alive in the sense that it had no discernable brain activity. They were effectively its voice, its thoughts and actions.
So Morris is not really there? from Jenny
No but some vestigial memories are being reactivated as they grow and specialise. Some cybermites specific to the brain are being developed.
Paradox hesitated,
And yet, and yet, they are aware of a presence they cannot explain, it has no detectable substance.
A soul! exclaimed Sara, His soul is still there!
Soul? I dont know. One of my few memories is of floating above my body, then being drawn back into it as the mites were introduced.
An out of body experience? said Sharpe, Heard of it, but I dont know how much of it is true. You may have been close to death and just imagined it.
Jenny indicated that she wanted to be alone with Paradox for a few moments. Sara wasnt sure but Sharpe touched her arm and nodded. Reluctantly she followed him out of the church and Jenny sat facing Paradox. She was still for a long minute before asking,
Is it okay to call you Morris?
Im not Morris, not as you remember him.
Do you remember anything about us?
Us?
We had feelings for each other.
Im sorry, I dont remember that. Im not surprised that Morris was attracted to you. You have lovely eyes you know.
Jenny was do her best not to cry and signed,
Morris said that was what made him fall for me. That and me kicking his butt at unarmed combat.
Paradox drew on improving memory and attempted a smile,
I now recollect that you are what Morris called, devious, bad-tempered, violent.
Jenny waved him to a stop,
Yep thats about it.
I am truly sorry but this body now houses these cybermites and the fact is that David Morris is no longer here.
Not even his soul?
Well, isnt that more a matter of belief than provable fact?
Maybe, maybe not.
But Jenny realsied that their former relationship had died in that cellar. This resurrected thing was not Morris and she had no feelings for him either way. At least this conversation had allowed her to reach this conclusion and now she could treat Paradox as a new-found ally. Assuming she could trust him.
As they stood to rejoin the others, he signed,
Another memory has surfaced. What have you done with your hair?
------ In five hundred years time, most of us will be forgotten dust. But Hitler will still be remembered, God loves irony.
