Pillar to pillar
F.R. Toscano

There is no salt or sand between us -
Just cadence free words,
Haunted by a past that never was.

You tell me you love me but
Not like before:
You said we were something that
Should have died at birth.

You slit your wrists for me,
But I could be wrong because
I no longer remember if
The note I found was written
In your hand or mine.

I don’t think it matters;
We’re strangers now,
Names withheld,
Faces turned to dust.

The world only stopped once and
That was more than it owed us.

pillars and pillows
read this as pillow to pillow at first, because I've been coffee free and I'm dense... after that first java infusion came back and went oh, now I get it *slaps self with heel of hand on forehead*...

like this 'cause the usual phrase is from pillar to post, meaning to be pushed around, buffeted by fate or force… pillar to pillar implies a static, implies a deficit of movement, a stagnation… thinking about pillars of salt too, like Lot’s wife… she was turned to a pillar of salt for looking back, so… these two pillars are turned to salt, are trapped standing still, bearing the weight of the world because they can’t help looking back, because they are trapped by their past…

yeah, I know, its amateur hour on the poetry analysis channel ;)… anyway, it resonated for me. it was sad and painful… an ending that’s really an infinite stalemate, between should and might’ve been… maybe that’s all any of these “endings” actually are…

Jesus, I’m getting morbid… I will leave the poem in peace. it’s a beautiful thing though, this. a real keeper. best to ye.

thanking two pillars of the written word
Shannon,
Have had the first line in my head for years now. Never knew what to do with it. It popped up again the day I wrote this poem and it just flowed from there.

Anyway, the title does refer to Lot's wife. I figured looking back might have the same effect on me. Leave it to Shannon O'SomethingIrish to make me sound like a proper poet...

Terence,
Umm...2144? Was that a typo or you planning on finding the fountain of youth in Chile? And I think you get your jollies off with just about any ol' word.

Funny thing, for over twenty years, I have been dreaming I will die at 137. That means I will die in the year of our invisible lord, 2105. Hope you make my funeral...

Thanks for commenting and being such good friends. What would I do without you guys?
