Various forms of the media have been suggesting to the Senator Hillary Clinton camp that she concede her run for the presidency since the Iowa primary. And during a normal elections year that would have probably occurred.
But this elections year thus far, has not been a normal one. For the first time in US history we have an African American who is now the Presumptive Democratic Nominee, Senator Barack Obama. A nominee who went up against fellow democrat, and a woman, Senator Hillary Clinton And along the route of this year’s democratic primaries, a few other out of the ordinary instances have occurred as well.
For one thing, there is the matter of the Super Delegates. Again, during a normal elections year, they might not have stepped in, but this year not only did some of them step in, but they also made themselves better known to the public when they kept on endorsing Senator Obama. The more stunning aspect of this is when a few Super Delegates who were on Senator Clinton’s side openly took Senator Obama’s side. One example of this is the Bill Richardson factor.
Politics is not, has not and may never be a fair battle. But when you have Super Delegates leaving one camp for another, one might wonder, how can this ever be a fair primaries session? Again, this is something that is far from the norm.
And as we all know, another something that kept happening was how intensely certain forms of the media wanted Senator Clinton to quit the race every time she lost a primary or did not win one by a wide enough margin.
So obviously when Senator Obama became the presumptive Democratic Nominee last Tuesday evening (June 3rd 2008) almost everyone expected Senator Clinton to concede.
So when that did not happen, many of Senator Obama’s supporters were upset. And they were upset because Senator Clinton did not do what would have been done had it been a normal elections campaign. But Senator Hillary Clinton is no easy quitter. One more out of the ordinary factor.
And with the Super Delegates who left her side for Senator Obama’s, one should give her credit for staying in the race as long as she has. It takes courage, strength and stamina to do this, for not everyone can. Someone else would have already dropped out a long time ago once he/she realised that he/she were on the losing side of the primaries.
So come tomorrow, (or Saturday June 7th 2008) many are expecting Senator Clinton to concede to Senator Obama. And many people want her to concede so they can have somewhat of a normal elections process, but she just might end up suspending her run, not conceding.
And in an elections year in which nothing much has gone the normal route, why should she just concede when the Democratic Nominee would not become official until all the delegates have had their say at the Democratic Convention in August?
