Unsleeping, alone this quiet night.
Your ghost beside me scents the sheets
Sad aromatic souvenir.
Eyes closed I watch you sleep,
Stands of gold across your face
Angelic, peaceful easy grace.
Lips parted as in one last kiss.
A single tear falls from my cheek

Silence’s depth is beyond measure,
Unfathomable night
Closes, holds enfolds
Radiant Selene steals from cloud to cloud,
Stealthy huntress brave and proud.
Bright mystery moon approaches
Slips in with the shadows.

Startled, I gasp: Selene,
Bold emerges from the darkness
In fine silk, sheer white and silver.
Fair Selene lies beside me.
Light in darkness, dark in light.
Goddess, moon, ethereal bright,
Joy forever, thing of beauty.
Sinuous, shifts beneath my fingers,

Imagined caresses gentle, fleeting,
Silent murmured, words of comfort:
Noiseless touch as light as zephyrs.
Fair Selene holds me to her,
Whispers we shall be together
Draws me from despair’s deep chasm,
Bright moon, entrancing immortal, incomparable.

"Sad aromatic souvenir"
a stately, very graceful poem this, well put-together too, the language perfectly suited to the subject... very nice indeed. thanks for sharing.

Silence’s depth
There's an eloquence to this poem that I find lacking in a lot of what I read lately.

(That's not a jab at Lit because I have joined other sites and left them just as quick. I am still here on Lit...)

It's a very romantic poem, this. Made me picture hearthside dinners with The One. Selene is very fortunate to have someone write such beautiful sentiments to her.

The full moon
Thanks for reading this - and for your kind comments. What I love about poetry is the economy and the discipline it imposes on you You both know this well and I admire your very different styles - such a contrast with mine!

This poem was inspired by loneliness and the full moon (Selene is the ancient Greek goddess of the moon) which sometimes on a cold clear night shines bright through the bedroom window, casting that soft, bright moonlight on the bed. In myth, Selene entranced Endymion and he fell into a permanent sleep - though they also had many children, so he was not completely asleep all the time. As something of an insomniac these days, the idea of sleep is one that draws me!

Lovely Selene
OH! so, so beautiful!

This has a gentle, loving and sensuous flow to it.

Inability to sleep and loneliness combined are very inspirational both in pain and creativity.

Right there with ya!
