Burning down the pike
F.R. Toscano

It was a good idea
Burning Down The Pike.
I danced around the bonfire created by
The Looff carrousel,
Jumped through the flames -
As if inspired by
The muses that ignited them and
Named each and every
Stationed horses with gilded bits
Going nowhere.
How I wanted to immortalize
Their sad faces with quick embraces.
But remembering them seemed enough.

So close to water but
This far from heaven,
Seemed like
The right thing to do was rebuild.
But what today is vibrant,
Yesterday was concrete.
There are a million faces here come midnight and
A million dreams that never mattered:
Dimmed lights fail to inspire more
Than grunion runs and
Ghosts from the Queen Mary
Across Rainbow Harbor or
The breakers beyond.

Everything has died again while
The beaches recede to what should have been and
Never was.

Memory lane ghosts and travel logs....
OK, so now you brought back from San Francisco in your other poem back to southern California Long Beach and my tour of the Queen Mary ship....also made me think of the carousel at the Santa Monica pier. Of course I know this is all background imagery for much deeper meaning of feelings, place, time, etc., but that was what your poem did besides the beauty of the poem and aura of the language of poetry, it still took me to my own (once again subjective memories of my own place in my life from my past, mostly sadness over the futility of the human condition and how nature is exploited and not respected enough) so whatever personal meaning there is here for you, beautifully written too, thanks for taking back to both San Franciso and Los Angeles memory lane tonight. Both great poems. You are a true talent.
Blessings

A splendid poem.....
Personal or otherwise 'FR', this is splendidly written. It has a sense of past people / events returning to the present, albeit perhaps, in different forms. A sense of deja vu if you like. The initial description of the burning of the Looff carrousel, along with its stationed horses is most interesting, not least because as I understand it, one of the horses on the said carrousel is named 'Casper the Ghost Horse'. And this ties in neatly with your later mention of 'Ghosts from the Queen Mary' along with everything having died. It would seem that the present 'vibrancy' achieved at this place, was achieved at a human price of sorts. As you suggest in your closing lines, what should have been, 'never was'...

Thanks Lena and Colin
I like the Santa Monica amusement park. Doesn't have the charm of the Pike but it'll do on a lazy afternoon.

Lena, you can be as subjective as you want. You're the reason I am here on Lit and I will always be indebted to you for that. You brought me back out of my shell. Not sure I emerged as beautiful as a butterfly, but at least I am out of it. Thanks.

Thanks to you Colin. You don't comment as often as others but, when you do, it means the world. I still feel as if this poem needs some work but I don't know that I will ever revisit it.

Thank you both for reading and commenting.

buring up
glad to come back and find you here also, it’s like coming home to a lit fire and a stiff drink waiting… reassuring…

loved this poem when I first read it, and I love it still… more now the horses are immortalised rather than painted… I think it’s the contrast of eternity and embers, the desire to create something lasting from the quick of the moment… I get that, I really do… and I feel for poet-self as he struggles with impermanence and the destructive/ creative instant… does that make sense… I’ve had no sleep and too much coffee, so I can’t really tell…

like I think I said before, I have a weird personal relationship with fire, and I’ve written a fair few poems on the subject… this carries the spiritual exhilaration better than everything I’ve ever written and as well as anything I’ve read… glad you’re still working with this… it’s very fine indeed. best to ye.

Thanks Shannon
Ah, Shanahan! You finally made your grand return. Now, if only I could get Terence and Cam to post again, the gang would be complete. Lucie will eventually return too. Fingers crossed...

I did tinker with this poem. Made slight changes from the version on LM. And, yes, you do make sense.

And stiff drinks are my specialty. I am such a perv... To paraphrase Sparks, "All I ever think about is sex/All I ever think about exclusively/All I ever think about is sex, all right with me"

Why thank you, Ms. La'Shea
Thank you for brilliant. Not sure it's half as but I will take it. Thank you too for the flow comment. Not what I was going for but glad someone noticed.

And coming from a performance artist, it means twice as much.

Good to see you on here again.
