Robert Downey Jr. once admitted in an interview that because of his drug/alcohol problem, whenever he works on a movie, he gets paid when all work is completed because of the risk the producers undertake when signing him on.
And after seeing proof of Robert Downey Jr.’s work, it is easy to see why he is called upon or hired to take on certain roles. The guy is good at what he does on screen. And playing Tony Stark/Ironman in the latest comic book hero brought to life on the big screen is another indication of Mr. Downey’s superb acting abilities.
When the movie begins, members of the viewing audience, comic book lovers and non comic book lovers alike learn a key aspect about Tony Stark. He has inherited his father’s weapons manufacturing company. A company that prides itself on building high tech weapons to help in the battle against terrorism. One such weapon is the Jericho, which is a missile that when released emits a group of bomb like devices that causes mass destruction on and around its intended target.
And when Tony Stark is abducted by a group of Afghan rebels, and waking up to notice that a device has been placed in his chest to keep pieces of shrapnel from travelling to his heart, he is told by the leader of the group to build them a Jericho weapon. But knowing he will not be shown the road to freedom after constructing such a weapon for the wrong hands, the brilliant and cunning Tony Stark decides to build something that will set him on the path to freedom.
So he builds an Ironman costume that he ultimately uses to fight his way to freedom and out into the desert where he is rescued by some American soldiers. But something happened to Tony Stark while he was being held captive in that cave in Afghanistan.
He realized that the weapons his company was building were used to destroy not only the lives of evil terrorists, but also innocent bystanders. And as the story advances and unfolds we meet other interesting characters along the way.
One such character is Tony Stark’s quiet and loyal assistant, Pepper Potts who is played well by Gwyneth Paltrow and the movie’s villain, Obadiah played by Jeff Bridges. And long before realizing that that he must now save the world and his assistant from Obadiah’s wrath, Tony Stark builds an advanced or high tech version of the Ironman costume.
I would not give away the ending here for those who have not yet seen the flick, but if you do get a chance and action movies is to your liking, give this one a spin. Whether you have or have not read any of the Ironman comic books, the movie has a smooth and easy flow, good acting, special effects and you get to see Robert Downey Jr. Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges in unique roles.
