Oh their tax grab sails on the ally-ally-oh,
The ally-ally-oh, the ally-ally-oh,
Oh, their tax grab sails on the ally-ally-oh
Since that budget day last springtime.

'Twas then Brown declared that the 10p rate must go,
The 10p rate must go, the 10p rate must go,
'Twas then Brown declared that the 10p rate must go
On that budget day last springtime.

Now New Labour's sinking to the bottom of the sea,
The bottom of the sea, the bottom of the sea,
Now New Labour's sinking to the bottom of the sea
Says a YouGov poll this springtime.

So Labour MPs dip their heads into the sea,
Their heads into the sea, their heads into the sea,
So Labour MPs dip their heads into the sea
All praying YouGov's fucked up big time.

Colin Baker April 2008

A recent YouGov survey shows that New Labour is sliding in the opinion polls, probably in no small part as a direct consequence of the 10p cock up (cock up in the sense of abolishing it) which has now come into effect.

The Guardian online reports that;

"[Gordon] Brown [the current British Prime Minister] announced the abolition of the 10p starting rate of income tax last year [when he was Chancellor of the Exchequer]. He abolished the 10p rate to fund the reduction of the basic rate of income tax from 22p in the pound to 20p. A majority of taxpayers gain from the changes, which came into force this month [i.e. April 2008]. But around five million people earning less than £18,500 a year will lose out [these kinds of low earners are traditionally recognised as being potential Labour Party voters at election time]. Brown said at the time that this group would be compensated by other changes in the budget, like higher tax credits and increased tax allowances for pensioners. But Labour MPs have realised that there are still substantial numbers of [low-paid] people who are losing out"
