Ethology
F.R. Toscano

Shipbuilding requires patience;
It is a complicated matter and not unlike
Roadblocks encountered when
Considering the universe.

I stand under constellations that
Would ignore me
Were it not for my ability to shine darkly.
My latent need for believing

In God is
A confused science
That sets sails against
The slightest breeze.

I understand structure:
It is the extolling of repressed behavior.
Skinner knew this but his first response was
An irrational prayer that escaped his lips.

He failed to swim when
His ship was upended by
Lapping waves and
Wakes created by failed attempts to believe

In a God whose
Thirst is for semantics:
Tell Him He is wrong and
He will say “probably.”

***

I am full of inaccuracies;
I am just lost at sea.

I am starstruck by lightning;
I am drowning in

A stream of consciousness that
Would strand me on

A distant shore.

Ethology?
Well is that Fransisco contemplating God?
So is this a recently written piece? If so, you sound somewhat melancholy.

The bigger picture is never easy to understand or to figure out your place within.
"...a confused science that sets sail against the slightest breeze..." my favorite line. God, evolution, what are we to believe? Why do we have to believe? What if both theories were true? If there is a God then he/she had to have began life in some form. What if the Bible were just a book of believers with good intentions trying to spread a message of hope to a world filled with despair and weariness from a hard existence but written by the hand of man? And man does not have the ability to comprehend such a pure message or simply listens but does not hear it. Would that not make the Bible more of a collection of......opinions, simple stories made to assist people like todays self-help books or proof of our desperation to not feel alone and lost, need for direction for fear of directing ourselves? Do you know the very definition of Bible is a collection of books?

And who says we have to believe? Those who demand we follow they're ideas and then turn around and tell us that God wants us to be "meek" against the world? Wouldn't they be infact defying their own teachings of worshiping only the one true God? What if you have the choice to believe anything you want or not believe at all? And what if your decision were okay with this God thing. What if this good "parent" trusted you and encouraged you to make your own choices and thereby making the term unconditional love true? What if the water were closer to you the, "distant shore", than you know?

Sorry, got a little carried away by the subject.
I started to delete this but thought well it's "just one poets opinion", as you've pointed out to me.

Nice to see a post from you.
This is a thought provoking piece of art.
Love it,
Tammy...Dude!

invisible ink
where did this spring from? it wasn’t here yesterday? was it? either it’s a case of the disappearing/ reappearing poem, or I’m cracking up… anyway, whatever the reason, glad it sprung, and glad I made this my first stop this morning…

doubt is hard emotion to get across in poetry, I think, and to convey poet self’s struggle/ confusion without turning it in to the readers’ is harder still, and yet you manage it here, and I love all the different directions your central metaphor leads you off in… shipping is symbolically rich, but other poets have tapped that vein before and it could easily have become clichéd… it didn’t. you own your imagery and choreograph your muses, absolutely… skilfully done…

rather like this dark introspective streak of yours. keep searching soul and cosmos and not-quite-distinguishing-between-the-two… it produces damn fine poetry. best to ye

Thanks Tammy & Shanahan
Tammy,
not really contemplating God so much as contemplating behaviorism. But mildly - anything else would require a few more neurons that what I currently have.

Ethology is the study of behavior.

Shannon,
this actually disappeared minutes after it was posted because I noticed "repressed" was missing. Nothing supernatural here. Not today anyway.

Nothing wrong with cracking up from time to time. Hmmm...should have included that in this poem - which might need some finessing. But that's for another day and time. I am only concerned with beating you this time.

Thanks to you two for taking the time.

Real Ship Building....and
You are a master shipbuilder and you don't just haphazardly slap pieces of wood together and insist it is a ship when anyone looking at it knows it is just a bunch of wood piled together in a meaningless pile, I mean you can interpret somethings in various ways, everyone has that right, but sometimes, well it just doesn't fly, yet you always FLY, and I do mean fl....your shipbuilding and study of the constellations have a depth and reality that cannot be denied...your work is obvious in a sense of honesty and perception, and I love reading your stuff...glad you decided to continue gifting us all with more of the truth in "Francisco, the vigilant, wakeful, wise one."

Thanks again Lena
Think sometimes you praise me more than I deserve. But that's my insecurity to overcome - not yours.

I'm glad you invited me to join Lit. I would probably have never met such amazing people. I'd still be sitting in front of my computer, thinking everything I wrote was crap.

Still working on flying.

You rule.

Amazing Desvelado...
Don't thank me for inviting you here, I should be thanking you for having come here and stuck around and be as prolific a writer and most importantly a "a caring involved commentator that takes the time to actually critique other people's work and not just take, you are a giver and that is what Lit.Org needs more of, just like you" so you turned out to be a perfect fit...and your talents, personality, etc., have make Lit.Org a much better place to visit. I am very busy these days with health issues and having to drive a couple of hundred miles twice a month to deal with hospital visits and such, so I am here when I can, and I always come to read your work and the work of the rest of my favorites. Blessings~
