After hanging up from a long conversation with my sister
about my nephew and all of his shortcomings,

I looked down and noticed a scattering of leaves
Each with dozens of wart-like bumps and scales.

I wondered if they were defected from the bud,
Or merely products of their environment.

Meghan!
MEGHAN! YOU'RE BACK!!!

OK, third leg's stopped jittering...

Seems you and I are still on a similar wavelength. My last post is about my 6 yr old nephew. Not similar at all to your post but the coincidences continue. Synchronicity anyone?

You have been missed. Seems you have eased us back into the ways of Meghan with a succinct look at family disfunction.

You know, we're all someone's niece or nephew. That would make us all one with your nephew. Your writing shines as bright as ever.

I was beginning to think I was gonna have to fly to Alaska and force a pen into your hand. And here's another coincidence: You came up in an earlier e-mail today. Nothing bad.

Think I'll stop now before I start singing Shakespeare's Sister's "Stay."

perceptive perspective
fáilte ar ais! missed ye, Meghan, hope this is more than a flying visit, although we’ll try and bare it with stoicism and fortitude if it’s not ;) …

there’s that saying, isn’t there: an apple never rots far from the tree… used to confuse me, that, when I was little… this poem is a much better, much kinder rendition of that…

love the phrase “defected from the bud”. that’s me, that is, “defected from the bud”. made me think of those members of my family who like nothing better than finger-pointing and gossiping, without ever thinking to wonder WHY somebody is the way they are… guess that would involve some level of introspective critical thinking… not too many people are that in to that…

you are. you’re a mindful, thoughtful, observant and reflective poet-self, even in these few short lines. and that f**k! that’s what I say, world needs mindful, thoughtful, observant and reflective…

and we need the perceptive and empathetic... just occassionally cynical ;) voice Chinadoll…

don't make us beg. it won't be pretty.

We Three Kings
Miss you we do...Nature vs Nurture...Awesome...

Jeez whats wrong with all these Nephews??? Mine is 18 and his mom just found 2 bags of weed in his pocket the other day and she flipped...She had a huge addiction herself when she was younger..in and out of jail and all that.. I think the idea of him making the same mistakes she made scares the Holy Hell outta her...and it should...

What were we talkin about??? Oh yeah Nature vs. Nurture...leaves are bumpy...

Limited perspective.
The problem with time is timing.

Lately I've been feeling that itch to read, write, and respond again... it's just that life has thrown me a few curve balls in just the past week that mean I might not have any time to devote to it.

Well, save for the occasional 4am tired and possibly intoxicated ramblings that I would never subject on anyone. Wish I wouldn't subject myself to them!

Francisco, thank you. Your comments are always warm and thoughtful no matter how many times I play yo-yo with Lit. "We are all somebody's niece or nephew" - I hadn't even stepped back from my own musings far enough to see it from that perspective. Thank you for that, too. :)

Shannon, none of the apples in my family have rotted far from the tree. I always thought I was the oddity growing up, but the older I get and the more I go through, the more deep, dark secrets come tumbling out of my parent's closets that just enforce that adage's merit.

As for you, I just can't see you as defected from the bud. And if you are, I wish there were more like you who shared the same defective qualities. :)

"Thoughtful, mindful, observant and self reflective" is a compliment I don't get every day (or every decade). Thanks for the glow of that. I was in sore need of it.

I'd never like to make you guys beg. I may not be a daily presence yet, but I will try to fly in with a little more regularity. I just won't have time to read everything from everyone. :/

Terence, you old hound. C'mere, you! Sounds like your nephew and my nephew are in the same boat, just with different paddles.

Nature vs. Nurture. Bumpy leaves. Pretty much sums it all up, doesn't it?

Aint it strange
how a few bumpy leaves can cause such a deep ripples of thought? Everything is relative.

I've seen those leaves too. I never think of them as a shortcoming, and like how you can relate them to your nephew. It is like you say, a matter of perspective. I'll pay more attention to perspective the next few days.

thanks M
