Today I finished the novel “The Game of Lies” by the author Karen A. Lynch. I enjoyed the read enough to start wondering if the middle initial A. in Karen's name is the Alanna, the name of the chief character. Without giving too much away I suspect a lot of Karen is in the book.
Before I started reading I took a look at what others had said and also out of curiosity checked on some of the back-ground to the story, and most certainly how the author gained enough details and experience for such a book. That was a story on its own too and worth reading about.
Spies are fine. We al know about famous James Bond but here is a different one. And the theme /objectives laid out in the book are difficult too. Mixing money, bloodstock breeding, Mafia, Hizballah and the CIA forms only the tip of the iceberg. But doing the mixing in an entertaining way there lies a certain skill. More on that later.
Right from the start I got a jolt. That's good for me. No slowly warming up but straight away I learnt about a dead agent and the real connection to a threat from a nuclear device or 'dirty bomb.' After that events move swiftly involving a wider scope of locations and characters. Nothing it seems will stop the terrorist group from detonating their deadly weapon. It is the dead agent who's written request for a certain agent sets off events involving the agent Alanna. No other will do. It won't diminish the excitement to know Alanna is the named agent and we witness her drawn into the secret service for the start of an almost impossible mission. It is revenge that drives her on.
I wish it were as simple as that. But sub plots begin as a bigger picture emerges and the reader learns more about how agents spin a good cover story. Alanna is true in this aspect. She represents horse breeding but here the author shines as this is her love. It also provides the reason for Alanna to travel around without drawing unwanted attention.
There are many points of tension and pitfalls throughout the book for Alanna. But where a spark get s lit is when the previously mentioned bomb is delivered. Can a female agent save the day? You will have to read to find out the answer. But sufficient to say the choreography of events leading to the showdown remains superb. I can picture all the elements of the plot in my head. Remember gunships? Bullets, RPG's and a few other things flying about with those breathtaking twists and turns we expect in serious espionage work. Stay on the edge of your seat but hang on to something safe. Things do happen with stunning effect.
As a writer myself I'm impressed by the book. Impressed enough to ask the local library to add it to their stock. Well done Karen for writing this entertaining spy novel. Now I keep looking over my shoulder. Never know what's about, I guess.
Fancy a spy contest? And the Female Spy today...
