a poem for Dr. Carl Sagan

Venus and Jupiter
had become
conspicuous
in the dark
simplicity
of the winter sunrise sky.

Every chilly morning
for 6 days
we observed
their silent presence.

One day I decided
to ask him a question.

“How is it,” I said,
“that some people mistake
Venus and Jupiter for UFOs?”

“Simple,” he said,
as he tapped his forehead
with his index finger.

“Some people mistake
Venus and Jupiter for UFOs
because they’re so fucking stupid.”

We chuckled and our breath
came out white clouds, mingled,
and hung in the air.

F'ing stupid people
Funny thing, I was just on ebay looking to replace my Carl Sagan Cosmos dvd that I lost a few years ago. The man was indeed someone to admire.

That is probably the only way to answer such a question. Of course, Terence (KilgoreTrout)will probably disagree. He believes in bigfoot and little green men.

Funny and lucid read.

Oxymoron?
Seeing the blatantly matter-of-fact in the largely abstract art of poetry is quite a sight indeed. I enjoyed this one.

still caught
on "dark/ simplicity", which is a haunting and arresting image... I like the juxtaposition of beauty/ stupidity, grandeur/ matter-of-factness…

also found this weirdly touching, possibly it’s the chuckling. nicely rendered.
