Not many historical men I’ve known
Would drink of Florida swamps fearlessly
As the Juan and only Ponce de Leon,
Seeking the famed Waters of Bimini.

He sailed second voyage with Columbus
And ruled Puerto Rico for a while –
A true adventurer cast among us,
An occupier with Spanish style…

The original Ernest Hemingway,
Only he never wrote down anything
Except receipts for slaves he sold that day
Or from his Cuban land speculating.

They said he was shot, but they hid the truth,
He drowned in the pool of eternal youth.

------
True style
is not a function of
financial circumstance.

Juan and only
there's always something ultimately satisfying in reading about those buried alive by their own hubris...

that said, there is at least something epic and spectacular about drowning in the fountain of eternal youth…

witty and well-presented poem, as always. just letting you know.
