The Pine Behind the Fraternity-Hut
I look out through my window pane
At the pine standing behind the fraternity-hut
With its drooping fronds on earth-ward mood to stoop
At the boisterous pull of death.
The lie-witnesses tell;
All but the truth:
But for the egrets of the late evening skies and
The galaxy of the watching stars, and their bond to the fraternity-hut.
Truth is conceived in their oath
And sanity; mid-wived by their fraternal bond.
They tell in naked words:
The thunder of the last night strikes
Had gone with the skull of the pine, and
Without a head, now stands, the pine behind the fraternity-Hut.
