Set the scene, a dreary Sunday night at Doc Watson's Pub, South 11th street, Philadelphia. The battle of the band has commenced. Three local bands compete for a grand prize of 20,000.00, not too shabby. Mind you, this is only round one of many and only one band will be crowned champion. I walked into the room right as band number one was on stage. They didn't impress me at all. Low stage presence, songs were mediocre and the mood in the room was unenthused to say the least. Band number two stepped up. They had a little more energy, but I just wasn't feeling the style of music. Kind of a Sublime sound mixed in with Fat City Reprise. The lead singer rambled on and on about his my space page, I needed a drink just to stand it. Thankfully they left and band number three took the stage. Was this my reason for coming? Absolutely! Immediately I noticed the stage presence, the lead singer ran out into the crowd and started pulling people to the front of the room. I watched as band members played this show like it was their last ever. High votive energy filled the room, people screaming at the top of their lungs. Even a ballad called "Carolina" was played, which made the female audience swoon over the lyrics. I knew watching these guys that Philadelphia had their next great band, and this band's name is Volume Runner. Why hasn't a label picked up this band? I haven't the faintest idea, but I can tell you this, scope them out before they do. At ten bucks a ticket, you'd be an idiot not to check them out. I am certain that in the near future you will be standing in line at the tweeter center hoping to get a lawn seat to hear these guys rock. Round two of the battle of the bands is coming on Feb. 24th and I suggest you go see them for yourself. If you value Alternative rock music as much as myself, if you are utterly sick of the music being played on the radio or in your CD rotation, this is the band for you. Volume Runner has arrived, they are hot and ready to rock!
