Though her eyes have never settled
into your gaze
Your unwavering path has transcended
matters of sex
a lust for power, for freedom’s lure
Propagating in high volume
Transmitting waves lilted low enough
to reach the
Growing needs
Of a gifted young girl sequestered beneath the layers of a damaged heart…

Layers that threaten ‘lie down’
for condemnation abounds
Layers that threaten ‘hang your head low’
don’t show
That proud matriarchal strength
… honor of the grande dame
… legacy in Indira Ghandi
… grace of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
… resilience of Ruth Perry
… determination of Eugenia Charles
… Tutsi in Sylvie Kinigi
… fire in Shirley Chisholm

She watches as condemnation tips the spears
Of political analysts and fearful false leaders
Who impose the very terror they attempt
to wash out
Onto ‘weaker vessels’, onto humankind

Today, she wonders exactly who?
Of the group that couldn’t stand to see you
One of her predecessors like other women
leading in Africa, Argentina
Chile…almost America…
almost Pakistani
blow up and kill you
who tragically died before her time

above all else
this has such dignity... a dignity that is tempered with a true poet's understanding of humanity and human frailty.... Lucie had it with "worthy"... like everything you write....

a pleasure to read your work again, innarae
