NB: for my friends

...

When beauty mattered more
Than honesty

And freedom more than
Consequences

You were kind enough not to
Distinguish

Between being broken
And being whole.

------
The human race, the only race I know where everybody loses.

What I give, Hope it matters
Shannon o'Dubhuir, look at ye now will ye? In all your beauty for us all to see now. Ye don't want to take that away from us all now, do ye?

Well, that was the best Irish I could do, I apologize.

What I am about to say about your sentiments here I think may be exactly the opposite of what you meant here, "aye, but I'll say it none the less" (in my best Irish spoken). Promise I will quit this time.

Honesty matters more than beauty, it is beauty.
Consequences in the end may have you cursing freedom.
And we all are so so broken.
So I must be honest and hope you find it's beauty.
This comment I am giving was for your blog of Dec. 22nd. And it is my best, my very very best. Robert.

28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Matthew 11, the speaker of course, Jesus.

given
In order for one to be whole, he must first be broken. Anyone who says he didn't suffer in life is a liar.

I often wonder what keeps me in this world but can never come up with a an answer besides my love for my family and friends (a group you most certainly belong to). I look around, at paraplegics; at the homeless; at addicts and wonder what keeps them going. My problems are minor compared to others but they are indeed mine. I am still here though. You are too.

I will stop myself before I start singing "You're beautiful" by James Blunt. I love that song despite it being sooooo mainstream.

Anyway, kind sir, I am glad you are here, posting. Here's a pact for ye: You leave Lit, I leave Lit. How's that for guilt?

To Shannon from friend
omigod.

to think I spent 18 years of my professional life in the "us and them" of "whole" and "broken"...

make that wasted. To think I wasted 18 years.

There is NO difference between whole and broken.

Thank you God for letting me live long enough to discover this!

"You were kind enough not to/Distinguish": what a line, this!

(Recently, in my one limp forward two limps back recovery from surgery, I asked a friend for a care package of kindness, love and prayers. I received it.)

Kindness is distinguished, I say, not distinguish-ing...

this is a lovely
poem. i've read it now, several times. at first i wasn't exactly sure what it really meant. it was rather perplexing. then i read it once more and understood.

i hope you have an enjoyable new year!

Nice Stuff!
Wow! This is delicious! A superbly written poem, with presence, passion and pain. Yes,this poem speaks about humanity. Yes, poem possesses imagery, clarity and simplicity. Yes, even the Greek Gods blush reading this work of art. Indeed, poem sings with resonance. Yes, I like reading your shorter poems best. Keep telling the truth, with paper and pen. May God bless and always keep you whole. Again, well done. Do take care

thanking six [friends]
Lena, right back at you. happy new year to you, my friend...

Robert, thank you kindly, my friend. I forgive the Irish accent, redeemed, it is, by the sincerity of your words... beauty mattered more than honesty because sometimes the truth is not what a person needs to hear... you might know the truth, doesn't mean it's not better for the heart to pretend, for a while at least, sometimes... freedom mattered more than consequences because nobody is perfect and sometimes you need just to "go" or "be" without any strings attached... broken and whole are- I think- the same thing as far as human beings are concerned... which I think is what you're saying, just with different words... I learnt this truth only recently, my friends were quicker off the mark... there kindness and astuteness has saved my life more than once...

Francisco, so guilt me ;) I was raised Catholic, I can take it. ha-ha-ha-ha... but I won't be going anywhere for a while. I'm more or less back in the land of the living, and will survive to bark and bite another day... we all suffer, my friend... I think that's what unites us as human beings... it don't work on a sliding scale. we know what we know and we feel what we feel... hopefully, 'cause suffering is our common lot, we learn compassion, and this compassion keeps us going...

Lucie, "Kindness is distinguished, I say, not distinguish-ing" yes! that's it exactly... that particular realisation arrived with me relatively recently... I hope I am smart enough to make use of it...

Johndoe, the same to you my friend, thanks for stopping by, hope to read more of you in the new year...

FireFly, thank you kindly my friend, mostly for seeing humanity here, which has it in it to be transcendent too...

to all my Lit friends who rated and commented so kindly, on this poem and others, and to those not present, who offered their support for more than just writing, thank you very much, and happy new year.
