note the dead
say a prayer

get over it
there's a parade

it's not real
it's not you

it's them

go home
have a beer
watch TV

an old war movie

they died
to entertain
with their boots on

for fireworks
for hot dogs
for beer

for flags

of our fathers
and our fathers'
fathers

all children once
playing at war
the old movie

nobody dies
they just fade away

heartwarmingly
neverendingly

hummm
always have to wonder what is it that's being "memorialised"... is it the truth, in an real or meaningful sense? or is it a an effort to enshrine a more palatable, sanitised version of reality, "heartwarmingly/
neverendingly"... something about that schmaltzy patriotism rings false, and is, perhaps, a little insulting… food for thought, this, the antithesis of schmaltzy…

Well, they fight and die so we can enjoy our things. Poem is supposed to be a cynical take on how we put a smiley face on war. In WWII, Americans didn't like seeing news photos of dead Americans, especially those from Tarawa. We like our war images to show lots of dead 'enemies' and John Wayne leading the charge.
