After all these years,
I wonder,
If I have lived,
A good and decent life.

I treated my parents well,
Loved my son,
And have been,
A fairly decent husband.

Taught my students,
Everything I knew,
And been honest,
With all of my friends.

Fed and hugged,
My dog,
And tried to treat,
Others with respect.

Being an old man,
Nearing my,
Final days.

I am convinced,
That I,
Will never,
Know for sure.

If I am,
Good enough,
To one day,
Be with God.

That being said,
I shall now,
Walk to my room,
And go to bed.

Trusting that,
The Lord,
Will take,
Care of me.

"After all these years"- isn't it surprising that we think about this stuff now? When we were doing things that, maybe we shouldn't have done, where was the thinking? Yet, we are here.

Your rhetorical look back is just evidence of what you have done and ground-work for the future.
Isn't it great to know that our kids are our groundwork, especially when they are great kids? (They didn't get that way entirely by themselves)
Hey, Doug, thank you for the inspiration you bring to me. I usually agree with you, cause I'm a liberal, but even if I didn't, I would agree with the position that you bring to the table, of a thoughtful human being.

Oh, I get what Lucie said about the short breaths and the commas...I can see that, feel that. Good.

To each of you.
Thank you so very much for the kind remarks and sweet refrain to a few thoughts that occurred to me the other night before I decided to go to bed.

Bless you.

nobody’s perfect

I like the self-contained nature of each of these thoughts, like bubbles rising one by one to the top of the consciousness, forming altogether a searching inventory of human imperfection…

But none of us are perfect, if we were we would not be human, we must do the best we can and trust in something higher… beautifully and sparingly expressed, this.

After All These Years
I just read a book entitled Glimpses of the Devil by F. Scott Peck
Your poem brings to mind my favorite thought from the book, "The path to holiness lies through questioning everything." Your thoughts are thoughts I have had and have kept me up many nights. Stephanie Miilican
