It has come to my attention in the last week that a valued and respected member of our site has been posting work that is not their own. THIS SITE HAS BEEN PLAGUED BY A PLAGERIST. We at this site apologize to those talented poets (Hazelmarie Elliot, Leria Hawkins, John Tiong Chunghon, Gavin Shaw, PeterS Quinn, and Nakhil Parekh Orillo, whose beautiful poetry was brutally plagiarized by this said member. This member will not ever be posting on this site again and should take stock that their actions were hurtful, despicable and morally corrupt. The proof of this theft of words is overwhelming and the amount of thievery is staggering. Plagiarism in any form will not be tolerated on this site –it’s a dishonorable and loathsome act.

I will not name the name of this member and give them anymore notoriety to fuel their ego with. (We all know who it is) All I can say to this person is SHAME ON YOU.

In Sadness
Bob

All of these writers that I mentioned can be read at poemhunter.com. read there poems and comment on thier work -they are the real artists.

PS.S to answer HarryB I just didn't want to name the name and give her more ink but it is and was our once and lovely Wanda...

why
Why wouldn't the revelation of this person's name be a good thing?

( Posted by: HarryB [Member] On: July 21, 2007 )

That's too bad
I felt bad about not commenting on Wanda's work, but I neither loved nor hated it and so could find nothing to say. Maybe I just have bad taste! lol

on plagiarism
It's never about IF people find out. It's about WHEN. I suppose Wanda's test for us was to see how long it would take us to find out, and how long she could go on duping us. Who knows? Maybe she wanted to be part of a community of poets and ran out of her own things to say? Maybe she never had an original thought in her head to put into verse, and always stole from others? Whatever the case, plagiarism is pathetic.

Another good example of how people are not, in reality, what they appear to be, online.

So, Bob, feeling nostalgic yet about the good old days when this site was visited by the many faces of Lilia? At least, there was no plagiarism on her part...

Why do things always have to go from worse to worser to worsest?

In any case, it does no one any good to hang on to deceit and the low-level energy this brings.

It brings more happiness to just move on.

It would be nice if this site, as any writing site, could attract only people with a conscience.

We can hope...

It good to see you back on these boards and hear the words of a wise women. I too wax nostalgic and would take a hundred Lilia's and all the chaos that it would bring rather then being victimized by this plagiariser. What her motivation was only she knows but she gave Lit a black eye and I only hope that it will heal up fast.

Any way I hope to see and read some of your poetic melodies when the muse strikes you.

my warmest and fondest regards,
bob

knocked for six
didn’t believe this at first, and had I not been pointed patiently to direct proof by one of the artist's whose work was ripped off, I’d have defended Wanda to the last ‘cause she was someone I’d liked as a person and respected as a poet... feel cheated to be honest, as do we all. obviously. not much of a confidence boost or pick me up for lit, that’s for sure… sad is what it is, and it leaves an unpleasant taste…

but these things happen, I guess… be nice if they didn’t, but that’s not the kind of world we live in. so… back to writing… maybe.

shannon on the doubt
Shannon

This site has been through its share of sh*t and dirt and hopefully we can shovel this pile to the side and move on. To not move on and continue to share our work only adds fuel to those trolls, flamers and plagiarists whose goal is to suck the life out of anything that has value.

I truly understand how you feel. How can you trust anyone to share your work with on this site when the one that you trusted the most was a fraud -- All I can say is that I hope you do- there are no magic bullets to guarantee something like this won't happen again but life, the arts or anything of value doesn't come with a guarantee .

To lose a writer of your caliber would be a great loss to this site and I can only hope that you continue to let your muse grace us with your words.

question for you, Bob
So how do we find out which of our poems Wanda took to another site and signed her name to?

Lucie

an answer for luci
Luci

There are hundreds of writing sites on the net and many places where a plagiarist could hide. I don't know that Wanda took any poems from this site but if she had it would eventually be discovered. ( I know this is not a comforting answer.)

Plagiarists of Wanda's caliber usually lift the poems in their entirety -rarely changing even the title - Many writers due Internet searches on their poems or writings (Google etc) - usually by title or a few phrases. They can then query where their work is and open it up. Many writers have found out if their work is being plagiarized by using this method.

I will continue to do searches on various works and ask the owner of the site if there are IP searches that we can do to try to track down Wanda's activity on other writing sites.

I wish there was a filter that identifies plagiarized writings but there is none.

I wish all people were honest and trustworthy and would never think to plagiarize someones Else's work-but not all people are honest and trustworthy.

I will try to do the best that I can possibly do to prevent such a thing like this happening again and I will be do periodic searches of our archives to see if any of our poems have been plagiarized.

Thanks, Bob
Yes.

Would that a plagiarist be only a coward in hiding, though...

Alas, a plagiarist is a predator.

I leave my work here for those who might want to read it. Among my poems here, several were submitted to literary magazines for publication. I would hate to think that, among those accepted, some may have been plagiarized. Usually, I remove from here that which will eventually appear in print elsewhere. However, a plagiarist will have had plenty of opportunity to steal, by then.

The problem then becomes this: who has plagiarized whom? Should an editor see my work signed by someone else, I could be the one accused of plagiarism. Further, my credibility and my integrity as a poet will have been breached.

Thus, Bob, I am not in the least amused by this practice.

In your opinion, should I remove everything I have posted here?

Lucie

( Posted by: windchime [Member] On: July 23, 2007 )

Luci keep them here
Luci

Removing your poetry would be a loss to Lit but I would totally understand the reasoning for it. Although leaving them here can be deterrent to plagiarism. Your submissions have the dates when they were published here. This is how we knew Wanda was plagiarizing those poets poems-By checking the submission dates at the site where Wanda took them those dates were earlier then hers. When we asked her to show a submission that predated theres, there was only silence.

So if you left your poems here (and the unthinkable happened) and you were accused of stealing your own poems, you then have a source of submissions dates-so to answer your question yes I would leave them here.

Of course your poems can be lifted here or anywhere else where you chose to share them but those plagiarists would be found out if they tried to benifit through publication once a search was done for copyright infringement. Leaving your poems here ironically is a protection of sorts.

decision
Thank you so much, Bob, for all of your prompt and candid answers to my questions and concerns. My poems can now stay at lit. This is the outcome I was hoping for. Again, I am grateful for your reassurance.

Bob and Lucie
My dearest friends, not that anyone would steal my poems, but what I do whenever I would come up with a new composition, I post 'em here right away because the very nice space, perfect format that Lit.Org provides to its members is excellent for keeping records of all my poetry. Who knows what can become of everything I write? I have started submitting to magazines and e-zines, and though have gotten only rejections, my posting here assures me that none would dare recycle my rejected poems.

Thank you Lit.Org.

Is cloning plagiarizing God?

Fairplay
Just a thought, philosophers would then say, where's God's copyright that he authored the creation of humans?

Plagerism Pays...
...If it gets a few familiar names onto the page ;)

Hello all...lovely to see you. Like Peter, I always post my words here. Even if I drift off for a while, if I write, I post it...kind of committed to always having everything here.

But I do miss the chats; each time I have peeked in, there has been some uproar that I just couldn't face or fit in with life - so I flutter off again.

Nice to be in such good company though *sigh

Namaste,

friends...
Shannon, I can never say this as eloquently as Bob does, so I'll just be plain: Please, please don't leave this site! You are a true inspiration here! You are extremely prolific, and also able to sustain and surpass, in excellence, each and every installment you make here. I have always loved your work, and still read it from time to time, though more infrequently now. Don't go, and don't stop writing! Whatever you do, don't forget Bea's party, and other good times around here.

Michael, Here's to your good taste!

Peter, thanks for validating Bob's position with your own experience. You're a good friend!

Eric, my answer would be yes to your question but then, I'm not an atheist. I can see an atheist wondering if humans invented plagiarism before inventing God...

Tina, lovely to see YOU!!! Gawd, we really ARE like family around here, aren't we? We get together at weddings and funerals. This "funeral" where we mourn the loss of Wanda, poet-uncovered-plagiarist, has certainly brought some of us together...And yes, it's nice to peek in and find the camaraderie again.

HarryB. I agree with you: transparency is of the utmost.

And Kacee, thanks for pointing me here, my friend.

Bob, your commitment and dedication to moderating this site is exemplary and I am honoured that you paid such careful attention to me with this.

‘cause here is home

couldn’t leave, even if I wanted to. despite sometimes story weather , creative compass always pulls me back here… to spiritual ‘family’…

lit exists, not only on planes of inspiration and expression… also of solidarity/ humanity etc. said once raw green grassroots of the soul, and that still stands… we’re stronger than the shit that comes our way... that’s what family is…

your all beautiful, bless ye

still here

plagerism
No one is going to steal my work or words no matter whose they claim they are. I know my writing and I know I've written it. The thing I especially appreciate about this site is the openness to different ways of expressing ourselves. The critiques are positive, always--- like a mother's unconditional love.

Theft
I live near Nashville, Tennessee. Several years ago I wrote a few songs. Probably not gold record quality, but nevertheless I allowed a music agent to look at them. He was not impressed. Within a few months, I heard a song on the radio that "coincidentally" contained several phrases that I had written.
Perhaps we can help each other on this site. If I hear or read something that appears to be plagerized, I will do what I can to notify the true author. The sad fact is that there are people that are so desperate for attention that they will lower themselves to this level.
You can't exchange your self-respect for talent....
